Background
On the planet Dantooine...a child was born to two smugglers who sought daring adventures in the Outer Rim. Never knowing what the next score was or who they were going to steal from next. Unfortunately, while the child was yet a babe...they stole from the wrong people. They tried to run. They fled to the mid-rim, but they were attacked and raided by pirates. Both the smugglers were killed, but not before they hid the child in the undercompartments and called for help.
...help eventually came. The child was found adrift in the disabled shuttlecraft that drifted quite close to Eshan - the Echani homeworld - and despite being a human child, was young enough to be brought into the Echani society...that is, until the Jedi who was with them called them to stop. The child was of the proper age to be brought to the fold. He was tested for midichlorians and was found to have a surplus amount. A Force-Sensitive. However, he had no name, at least not one on record.
So the Jedi gave him a new one: Varric Sov. The first name is in honor of the captain of the Echani party who found him, and the surname is in honor of the sun in the Eshan system, called 'Sov' in their tongue. The Jedi Master - named Kublai Del-Byal - said farewell to his echani friends and took Varric to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.
Within his first few months, it become extremely clear that Varric's ability to use the Force was incredible. He constantly learned more, tested more, -felt- more through the Force. As he grew, so too did his skill. As he grew, so too did his connection.
While Master Del-Byal came to see how Varruc was doing every now and again, Varric rarely saw the Jedi Master who rescued him. As the years drew on, Varric Sov finally became ready to be a Jedi Padawan. Though before he could become a Padawan, he went with the other Younglings to the Gathering, a place for younglings to overcome their own darkness, their own fears, their own regrets. While Varric was usually first, this time? He was the last youngling to make it through the trial.
His fear was abandonment. Of cruelty. Of loneliness. But his strength was justice, perseverence, and determination. He let go of his inner terrors, his past, his unknown past before the Jedi.
Thus when he walked out of the ice cave on Ilum? A purple crystal rested in his hand, which he later used to craft his lightsaber. It was not long after that he was chosen as a Padawan learner to the very Master who found him: Master Kublai Del-Byal.
Unlike his other teachers, Master Del-Byal turned out to be quite the strict teacher. A Jedi Guardian, he was a master of Niman, which suited Varric's needs perfectly in saber-training. Though each painful moment of learning was like unlearning what he had been taught before: Varric's drive was justice and peace, but Master Del-Byal taught him that such was not all that it had appeared to be and through swordsmanship, taught him patience and wisdom in his otherwise reckless actions. He taught him to -think- before he did, for not all would trust or could be trusted by a Jedi.
There eventually came a time when Padawan Varric and Master Del-Byal were sent to one of the Outer Rim territories to settle a clan dispute, and though Varric thought he knew for certain what was the cause, he trusted in his instincts and tempered aggressive thinking. Instead of charging in with violence in mind for the quickest route, Varric used his voice and a natural skill at negotiation to solve the problem. He was tactful in his speech, and because of his cleverness, the situation was resolved without bloodshed.
For Jedi are first and always, keepers of the peace. Never soldiers.
As Varric grew older, so to did his wisdom. So much so that Master Del-Byal soon realized that he had little else to teach him. So, he recommended Varric to the Jedi Council that his trials were ready to be completed. Sure enough, each trial was met with success that saw Varric Sov become a Jedi Knight.
