| Synopsis: | Thaarin and Vons aren't happy with Cayde's reckless piloting. At least Thaarin is a bit gentler about it. |
| Cast of Characters: | 159, Cayde Alexis |
- Athena (159) has posed:
Upon arriving back at the colony, shortly after returning the half wrecked vehicle to the rental yard, Thaarin and Cayde will find themselves returning to a dirty and disgruntled looking Vons.
"Where the hell have you been?" the Zeltrom man grumbles. "Oh, don't tell me you -actually- went out and rented that ship..."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Truthfully, as risky as it was, Cayde really did enjoy flying it. Yes, the shop owner hadn't been happy, but at least he'd been moderately appeased when he'd offered to help with night cleaning to make up for it.
The young Jedi shrugs. [Okay I will not tell] he signs when Vons remarks that he doesn't want to be told this news.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Vons curses loudly, while Thaarin sinks into a chair, looking exhausted.
"I knew it! I -knew- it! And you're not even sorry you left me alone to deal with those dumb birds. Why does everything have to be about you, and what you want, huh? Because you're Deputy? Sure, that's not an abuse of power at all!"
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
But...why couldn't he have just come along for the ride? Or ridden with the others?
Still, Cayde sighs, suddenly looking downcast. [Sorry] he signs.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin waves at Vons dismissively, brows furrowing evening deeper. "Now I think that's enough, from both of you," he says.
Vons frowns and storms into his room, slamming the door. The tall blue man massages his temples.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
There is a pause, as Cayde watches Vons storm off. Then he begins to head into his own room as well, still looking deflated.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin gets up and goes after the young Padawan with a sigh. He comes to stand in the doorway for Cayde's room, leaning on the doorframe.
He says nothing for a moment, just watches Cayde with a small smile, arms folded.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde was so busy staring at the floor, he nearly bumps into Thaarin. He startles a bit, stepping back.
[Sorry] he repeats again. He's beginning to wonder if that had even been worth it. Sure he'd felt refreshed in the moment, but now everything seemed to be coming crashing down on him. But he should start seeing about going to visit that school...
- Athena (159) has posed:
He chuckles softly and his hands close gently around his shoulders. He then presses downward bidding Cayde to sit.
"You have the tiles, yes?" he says softly. "I want you to tell me how you're feeling right now. And I also want you to tell me why you did what you did," he says, "With the ship you almost crashed."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde sighs, and sits down at his desk. He nods, taking out one of the small squares and putting it down on the desk. It has a series of icons associated with sports and games on it, and is meant to represent fun and recreation. He searches for another one and brings it out, one that looks like a relieved expression. Then he shrugs. [It felt good] he tells Thaarin.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin doesn't seem surprised. He sighs. "Look Cayde, why don't you take a few days off? Go into town, take one of the landspeeders with you and take a drive out in the field near the riverbend. Forget about the colony, I'll handle things, and perhaps when you come back, you'll have blown off enough steam."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde fixes Thaarin with a sad stare as he suggests taking a few days off. He was doing this all wrong, wasn't he? Well, simply taking off wasn't going to fix that. But he nods anyway. [Okay...]
- Athena (159) has posed:
The tall blue man sighs again, "Cayde, the problem is you're mixing your work and play, and the results are sometimes catastrophic. Now, there's nothing wrong with needing to blow off some steam every once in a while, but you can't make that the priority when someone's life and well being may be at stake."
"I'm not trying to make you feel bad for wanting to joyride, Cayde. But there's a time and place for it, and you're having trouble discerning it. I know you have it in you to learn how to, though. You're better than you used to be, but now you have more responsibility, unfortunately."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
But...he hadn't placed anyone's life at stake. Had he? Suddenly, there is a deep, sinking feeling. A devastating potential that he hadn't even considered before. Had he really put others lives in danger for the sake of his own recreation? Maybe he really shouldn't have volunteered for this. Maybe he really wasn't ready, even though Master Rykard thought he was. Would he have to let his master down again?
[I can't... no room for learning] he signs, staring at the floor again.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin sighs again and embraces him, "That's not true," he says to him softly.
"You're barely a man, Cayde, how could anyone expect you to stop learning and understand everything? -I- haven't even managed that yet."
"You can be better. I know you can. You just need an actionable plan that will help you, over time, become the person that you want to be. Will you help me, make one for you?"
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Exactly why maybe he shouldn't have volunteered for this...
But he tries not to let that show. He accepts the embrace, and nods.
[Okay...]
- Athena (159) has posed:
"I think this entire deputy business is certainly hard for you," Thaarin admits, "but I think that ultimately, it's good for you, and you can handle it, you just need some guidance, and like I said before, a plan." He motions for Cayde to come sit across from him at the dining table out in the common area, and pulls out a datapad.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde hesitates a moment, watching Thaarin sit down with a datapad. But he finally comes out of his room and sits down at the table. [I should visit school] he tells him. There was that one dispute, after all. And maybe it would be good for him to get to know some of the other people around his age. Relate to them better...
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Yes," Thaarin replies, without looking up from the datapad. "We can work that in, but really, I think you should do your best to focus on a variety of areas for improvement," he says.
"Communication being number one..." he adds.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
But, the visit should help him with that, right? Cayde brings out another datapad, where he'd been trying to come up with a letter to send to the superintendent at one of the larger schools in Kublop asking if he could visit and explaining his reasons for doing so. However, it's rather vague and confusing.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin frowns when he sees it. "You need to focus on both written and verbal communication in general," Thaarin says, "developing a better sense of expression -before- you go to the school, not after. Remember what I said about mixing work and play? We wouldn't want the superintendent getting a poor impression of you simply because you weren't sure how to say what you wanted to say," he says, starting to delete whole blocks of text from the letter.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Not knowing how to say what he wants to say...it feels like every day of his life. Cayde sighs as Thaarin deletes a lot of the text. Well, there hadn't been much there to begin with anyway. [But how] he signs.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Don't be discouraged," Thaarin reassures Cayde, "I'm going to show you. Use the tiles, and we'll work on adding more and assigning specific words to some of these visuals," he says, "that way, you'll soon be able to just use the words, instead of the tiles. It's going to take some memorization, though."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde nods and takes out all of the tiles, spreading them out on the table. Although Thaarin may notice him glancing at the shut door of Vons' room. He feels bad about upsetting Vons. But Vons always seems to be upset with him, these days.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Don't worry about him," Thaarin says, "he's acting like a child. He'll get over himself, eventually, and hopefully muster the decency to apologize once he's finished sulking about overworking himself."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
[But he always upset with me] Cayde remarks, sighing. But he does at least turn back to the task at hand.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Let's start simple," Thaarin says, "pick one, or a few. And tell me the word you think is most strongly associated with that visual," he says to the young padawan.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde nods and looks through the various icons that he'd drawn over the past months since Thaarin had made them for him. He picks out one with the silhouette of a starfighter or other ship flying through hyperspace, and another of a human woman holding a toddler-aged child by the hand as they are both walking...somewhere.
He studies them for several minutes but can't seem to come up with anything.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Well," Thaarin encourages gently. "What do you think? Just try. There's no right or wrong answer," he tells the young padawan.
"I'm not going to make any suggestions. Not yet."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde stares at them for a bit longer. Finally, he points to the ship one. [Race...flying race]
And then, to the one with the woman and child: [Parenting...]
His mind wanders a little bit, and he wonders if his mother could still be alive. He wasn't supposed to dwell on such things, but part of him couldn't help thinking about it sometimes.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Ah, perfect," Thaarin encourages. "Excellent. Now--"
He notices when Cayde starts to seem a little distracted. At first, he doesn't say anything. Then he clears his throat quietly, to get the young padawn's attention.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde doesn't respond immediately. Vons' sour mood in the other room doesn't help much, either. But after a few seconds he finally blinks and looks back to Thaarin.
[Sorry] he signs.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"It's alright," he says, "that was good, I want you to recognize when you're disassociating, Cayde," he says, "and you just did, so that's progress," he says with a faint smile.
"I want you to try to form a sentence about... racing, and the woman and child, using the tiles. And then I want you to translate that sentence into actual words."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde frowns pensively, then pulls a third square. This one is newer, and perhaps Thaarin hasn't seen it before, but it's a small representation of the Galaxies Opera House in the Uscru District back home. He puts it between the other two. However once again, he seems to be at a loss, just staring at them for a while.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin doesn't seem annoyed or confused by this. Instead, he smiles faintly at the young padawan, and points at the new square he's just pulled from the bunch.
"What does this one mean?"
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
[Event...entertainment...performance] Cayde signs, nodding after some consideration. However, he still seems stuck on building an actual sentence.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"I see," Thaarin says. "Why don't you make a sentence about parenting, and the kinds of things a mother and her child might go do... for fun?" He suggests.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde frowns pensively again, thinking about this. [A mother...] he begins to sign. [...goes racing...performance...with son] he offers, although he seems a bit unsure of himself.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Yes, that's good," Thaarin says, nodding. "But you're missing a few prepositions and possessive pronouns," he says, "A more well formed sentence would be something like..." He looks thoughtful, and then signs. /A mother goes to a racing performance with her son/
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
[Okay] Cayde nods, watching intently. He brings out the datapad again, and copies the sentence into written form. Then he exhales audibly. All that, just for a sentence. So much effort. Could it ever just come naturally? Why was it so hard for him, but so easy for most of everyone else?
Another sigh. [This...so slow.]
- Athena (159) has posed:
"It's alright," Thaarin say softly. "Learning something that doesn't come naturally is always going to take time," he encourages. "No one can become an expert at anything over night."
"Now, I'm going to try to create a hypothetical scenario where you would say the sentence to me, using Basic Sign."
He pauses a moment, and then says, "Say, you're thinking about going to visit that school, aren't you? What do you think some of the people your age there like to do, when out and about with their parents in town?"
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Cayde pouts slightly at this. Patience was never his strong suit when it came to this sort of thing. As always, the expression makes him look even more childish than he normally does.
Well, the child in the image wasn't exactly his age. But he tries to repeat the sentence in sign anyway. [Go to racing performance with parents]
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin just smiles faintly. "Well, that's not so bad," he says, "better than previously, certainly."
"What other things might they like to do? What about yourself?"
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Honestly...Cayde doesn't really know. He doesn't even know if they like going to races with their parents. It just happened to be those pictures.
He shrugs. [I do not know...I visit school...and I find out] he signs.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Cayde," Thaarin says with some amusement, "it doesn't matter. Just make something up. We're just creating a hypothetical conversation."
He gestures at the tiles. "Why don't you just pick one, and use it to say that it's something the other people your age might like."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Oh. Cayde sifts through the squares again, and picks out another one that looks like one of the bigger schools back on Coruscant. He knows that, at least. That many other people his age, go to some kind of school.
[They go to school....they like school...] he offers.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Good, good," Thaarin encourages. "Now what kinds of subjects are there in school? Perhaps there are certain subjects that people your age might like better than others."
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
Again, Cayde pauses, thinking. [Maybe math...they like math] he signs.
- Athena (159) has posed:
"Well, that's an idea. Why don't you try forming a full sentence, about people your age liking the subject of math in school," Thaarin suggests.
- Cayde Alexis has posed:
But it was an answer to the question, wasn't it? Cayde sighs and considers it again, but something Vons is brooding about in his room distracts him again. Then he looks down and realizes his hands are burning and swelling up...he must have touched something in the valley earlier again.
- Athena (159) has posed:
Thaarin sighs. "Alright, well, I think that's enough for today. But let's revisit tomorrow, and try to do this for at least a couple hours every day," he says.
"Patience is a virtue, Cayde. One of these days it will all pay off..."
